Matthew Brown, EA—Owner
Matthew Brown, EA, is the owner of Renewal Tax Services, LLC, and provides IRS tax resolution and representation services, in addition to tax preparation. He is most passionate about relieving his clients’ stress and burden of tax-related matters, including keeping up with current tax return and reporting obligations, owing back-taxes, receiving letters from the IRS, and more.
Matt is an Enrolled Agent, which is a designation earned directly from the IRS after passing a series of comprehensive tax exams. He is licensed to represent taxpayers in all 50 states of the United States. He started preparing tax returns professionally in 2010, because he enjoyed doing his own after he kept finding mistakes in returns he had paid to have prepared for himself. Simply put, he wanted to help others get better service than he had received.
Matt’s practice is dedicated to helping individuals and small businesses. Client projects he’s recently worked on include the following:
- Negotiated Partial-Pay Installment Agreements (less-than-full-pay) with the IRS for numerous clients
- Successfully achieved Currently Non-Collectible (Hardship) status for clients whose current finances rendered them unable to afford any payment to the IRS.
- Reduced/eliminated thousands of dollars of Failure-to-File and Failure-to-Pay penalties for clients
Prior to entering the tax profession, Matt spent more than 25 years in the business-to-business eCommerce field, specifically Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), connecting suppliers to retailers, raw materials providers to manufacturers, and financial institutions to large corporate treasury clients. He previously spent 10 years performing economic and financial analyses for clients including the US Department of Energy, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Edison Electric Institute. His tax experience began with preparation, then expanding into representation and resolution after earning his Enrolled Agent designation.
Matt earned his Bachelor’s degree from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and his Master’s degree in Regional Science from The University of Pennsylvania. Born and reared in Miami, Florida, Matt has enjoyed living in both NYC Metro and Washington, DC Metro areas, but has since settled in the Greater Philadelphia area with his spouse, Wayne, and Corgi, Theo.
During the pandemic, he gained an affinity for baking. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, has dreams of getting back in shape to ride in long, multi-day bicycle events, and volunteers annually (off-bike) for the Braking AIDS Ride to benefit Housing Works in their mission to end both AIDS and homelessness as epidemics. He prefers Star Trek over Star Wars, Marvel over DC (except on TV), but holds firms that Doctor Who (especially the Tenth) trumps all!
